Reflections on the 4th All Japan Outrigger Canoe Championship – 4th JOCA CUP
To all the teams who participated,
On Saturday we faced wind and rain, and on Sunday strong winds and swells, which unfortunately made it impossible to hold the distance race on the originally planned course. We truly appreciate your understanding as we adapted to a shortened course under these conditions.
As this is a marine event, we have no control over the weather, but we are pleased to report that we were able to safely complete the two-day schedule without any accidents.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who supported us—from the preparations and race operations to safety management and the after-party—which made this event possible.
We also extend our sincere thanks to the distinguished guests who attended the opening ceremony despite the inclement weather: Mr. Kirigaya, Mayor of Zushi City; Mr. Kondo, Member of the Kanagawa Prefectural Assembly; Mr. Mitani, Secretary to the Minister of the Environment; and Mr. Chisaka, Executive Officer of Koyo Machine Industries.
We recognize that the organizing team may not have been able to attend to every detail due to limited capacity, and we ask for your understanding.
This year, we welcomed teams from Guam and Hawaii, which was a great source of inspiration for domestic paddlers.
The ocean connects us all, and this memorable two-day event reminded us that outrigger canoeing is truly a lifelong sport.
The JOCA CUP and the operations of the association are non-profit endeavors.
Rather than flashy performances, we aim to steadily build and grow step by step.
We will continue to strive so that next year, the 5th annual race can be held under blue skies.
To all the athletes, staff, and everyone involved—thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Sincerely,
Mitsuru Obana
